What Readers Are Saying

I had heard about Amish Tripathi long ago but never got around to reading his work. However, I frequently heard high praise from those who had. Amish Tripathi has written two renowned series: the first is a trilogy on Lord Shiva, and the other is a series on Lord Ram Chandra. In terms of popularity, his Shiva Trilogy is more well-known and has always been on my bucket list.

Growing up listening to many stories surrounding Hinduism and Indian culture, it gave me motivation as an adult to look for novels such as this. A telling of grand heroes, powerful female characters, unrelenting use of magic and the constant message or lesson embedded in each tale. The Immortals of Meluha holds itself to this standard. Shiva goes through his journey learning of what it means to have the ‘perfect’ society. Along with the risks and tribulations involved in making the world a better place even though things seem fine on the surface.

Review on Book 1

The plot is no different from your average ‘chosen one’ narrative but it’s amazing how much a story can look so new if you simply change the cultural perspective. I loved seeing someone as revered as Shiva portrayed as a man who simply wanted to do what was right for the people. Except he realizes the world he’s in is a little more complicated than it looks when perfection involves hefty risks.

Review on Book 1

The first book was amazing. The world-building, the concept of Shiva as a human who becomes a legend, and the mystery around Meluha really pulled me in. It felt fresh and exciting.

The second book was good but not as strong as the first one. The suspense about the Nagas was interesting, but the pace felt slower in pa

Review on Book 1

The third book honestly disappointed me. I didn’t enjoy it as much. The story felt stretched, and the ending didn’t fully satisfy me emotionally. However, I really liked the overall message of the trilogy especially the idea that “evil” is not a person but a result of circumstances and human choices. That deeper theme was powerful, even if the execution in the last book wasn’t perfect.

About Amish

Amish Tripathi is a celebrated Indian author, broadcaster, and former diplomat known for his best-selling mythological fantasy fiction. He is best known for the Shiva Trilogy and the Ram Chandra Series, which reimagine Indian gods as human historical figures. His books, characterized by a unique blend of mythology, philosophy, and historical, are fast-selling, having sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

My Story

Before he was known as the fastest selling author in the history of Indian publishing, Amish Tripathi was a marketing and product manager in the life insurance sector. He even turned into an atheist during the Bombay riots of 1992-93, but his faith in God was restored during the time he researched on the Shiva Trilogy. From keeping aside his wish to become a historian, to taking up science and finance to earn a better living, Tripathi had been a practical person throughout his life — even when it came to writing and promoting his philosophical books, that went on to become The Immortals of MeluhaThe Secret of the Nagas, and The Oath of the Vayuputras.

While Tripathi was about to graduate from his B.Sc (Mathematics) course at St. Xavier’s College, his twin brother suggested taking the Common Admission Test (CAT) to pursue an MBA from one of India’s premier management institutes. While his brother couldn’t make it, Tripathi got through and went to IIM Calcutta. He then worked in the financial services industry for many years. Tripathi never really wanted to become a writer, but a show on History Channel gave his life a different direction.

Personal Life

Tripathi was born in a very religious family, with his grandfather being a priest and a mathematics and physics teacher at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Tripathi expanded his knowledge of religion and Hindu theology with the help of his religious parents and grandfather. He wanted to be a historian but soon realized that it’d be a career filled with struggle. Therefore, Tripathi dreamed of being a scientist or an industrialist.

Between the time Tripathi gave up being a historian to becoming a full-time author in 2014, he had been working the the field of finance at multiple companies, most of which were of the IDBI Group. The foundation of the smart marketing strategies Tripathi used to promote his books was laid during his time as a marketing and product management professional.

"I’m a voracious reader, and I can give you a long list of books that should’ve been bestsellers but they are not, because no one marketed them."

Tripathi had been an atheist and there were times when he didn’t step into a temple that he visited with his wife. This behaviour started to change when Tripathi was encouraged by his family to write a philosophical thesis on the nature of Evil. While Tripathi wanted to turn it into a book purely based on philosophy, his brother and sister-in-law advised him to write an adventure story and make philosophy a part of it. Eventually, the protagonist became none other than the “destroyer of evil” i.e. Lord Shiva.
